Good Friday: The Filipino Way | San Fernando City

San Pedro Cutud in the City of San Fernando, Pampanga attracts hundreds of tourists to witness Devout Catholics doing extreme penitence, Kapampangan (people of the province of Pampanga) call it MALELDO.

Crawling on the road, dragging heavy cross, whipping themselves with a bamboo sticks 'til their bare backs bleed and the most awaited part is the Crucifixion, there are numbers of devotees willing to be crucified but not all of them are allowed to do the practice, I asked one of the members from the City Government Office named Rolando that someone needs to undergo physical test and how devoted you are as a Catholic member and this is being approved by the San Pedro Cutud Organization with the assistance from the City Government.

Church and Medical Officials disapproved these practices though.

Devotees carrying a cross in the heart of the City.

A man is lying down under the heat of the sun for a few minutes and then crawl again. One should crawl only until he reached the Church.

Devout Catholics starting up whipping their bare backs.

Blooded backs, just a few walks and it's done.

Preparing to be crucified.

The Crucifixion Site
People are not allowed beyond the fence, lots of people gathered to witness this event.

Mountain-like site created for the sole purpose of this event where 3 wooden Crosses are standing, the other one in the middle is lied down as Devotee that was hammered on the cross is being removed.
